All schools that employ early career teachers (ECTs) are legally required to register with an AB. The AB is separate and independent of the Early Career Framework (ECF).

The South Yorkshire Teaching Hub's Appropriate Body service supports schools and teachers in a variety of ways, with the core functions being central to ensuring schools provide adequate support to teachers at the start of their teaching career. An AB has two key roles: monitoring support and monitoring assessment.
