National Specialist SCITTs

Chorus is home to the National Specialist SCITTs: school-centred initial teacher training programmes (SCITTs) which provide unique teacher training programmes that focus on subject-specific training.

Throughout the course, trainees learn directly from experts and professionals within their chosen subject area.

The programmes combine academic learning with practical experience in schools, along with specialist training from subject experts. This ensures you develop a strong understanding of teaching, are ready for classroom life, and become part of a community of subject-specific teaching community.

What are SCITTs?

There are two main routes to becoming a teacher:

  • Taking a university-led PGCE course
  • Joining a SCITT programme

Both lead to you attaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), but their approaches to training are different.

The core difference is that on a university-led course, you will be based at the university to learn the theory of teaching before applying your knowledge on school placements later on in the course. On a SCITT, you’ll be based in a school from day-one and be immersed in the everyday life of the school environment while you learn.
