Eckington School has ‘improved significantly’ according to latest Ofsted inspection
Published on 10/06/26

Eckington School is celebrating a landmark achievement after Ofsted recognised the significant improvements made across the school in its latest inspection.
Just four years ago, Eckington School received one of the most challenging Ofsted reports in the country, with students feeling ‘unsafe’ and safeguarding found to be ‘not effective’. As a result, the school was placed into special measures.
In April 2023, Eckington joined Chorus Education Trust and appointed a new headteacher, starting a programme of rapid improvement. Ofsted’s latest inspection in March 2026 under the new framework validates the progress the school has made, meeting safeguarding standards and reaching the expected standard in five out of seven inspection areas.
The latest report highlights the scale of the school’s transformation:
- “Pupils say the school has improved significantly and that they now feel safe throughout the day.”
- “Across the school, pupils feel that they belong.”
- “Leaders have created an inclusive culture where pupils feel understood and supported.”
- “Pupils behave positively across the school.”
- “Around the site, pupils treat one another with consideration.”
- “In lessons, pupils behave responsibly […], listen carefully and show positive attitudes to learning.”
- “Careers education is a strength of the school”
- “Leaders maintain clear oversight of vulnerable pupils, […] these pupils attend regularly, feel secure and play a full part in school life.”
- “Staff, pupils, parents and carers recognise the positive changes made in recent years.”
It also notes the positive experiences of the students in the school’s Sixth Form, recognising the strong academic outcomes, the calm and purposeful learning environment, and the strong careers guidance and support students receive as they prepare for university, apprenticeships and employment.
Richard Cronin, Headteacher of Eckington School, said,
“I am incredibly proud of what our students, staff and wider community have achieved together. The 2022 report was deeply challenging for everyone connected to Eckington School, but it also became the catalyst for transformational change.”
“This report recognises the enormous improvements that have been made in creating a school and Sixth Form where young people feel safe, valued, and supported. We have worked relentlessly to improve the school’s inclusive culture, behaviour, attendance, safeguarding and the quality of education our students receive.
“While we are proud of how far we have come, we remain ambitious for our young people and know there is more to do. Our focus now is on building on these strong foundations and ensuring every child receives the excellent education and opportunities they deserve.”
Chief Executive Officer of Chorus Education Trust, Chris James, said:
“The transformation at Eckington School is the most significant I have seen in my 35 years in education.”
“I congratulate Richard, his leadership team, staff, students, governors, and parents on this remarkable progress. I am confident Eckington School will continue to improve and ensure every young person achieves their full potential.”
