After 37 years of teaching and senior management in an east London secondary school, where his specialisms were science, business, head of year and careers lead, Steve Barks returned to Sheffield to be a full-time carer.
Wishing to continue contributing to education he has been an independent careers consultant, GCSE examiner and is a primary school governor. As well as over 30 years of experience as a school governor, Steve decided to become a public governor and patient safety partner at Sheffield Hospitals Foundation Trust where he leads on non-executive director recruitment as vice-chair of the Nominations and Remunerations Committee.

Dawn Carman-Jones

Dawn Carman-Jones has wide-ranging experience as a non-executive in the education sector since 2011, both as founding chair of trustees for a 14-setting primary and specialist provision multi-academy trust, and through involvement in complex hearing panels, advisor roles, and work in schools of concern.
Dawn established her own business, marketing, and education governance consultancy in 2000, and is an ACAS trained independent investigator, and trained mediator. She has a national reach through her independent work with national sector bodies, which includes quality assurance, senior leader performance management advisor roles, and the development and delivery of facilitated strategic discussions. Outside of governance, she is a wife, and mum of two young adults; is involved in scouting; has a love of hiking, and watersports; and is passionate about ensuring that children and young people have access to opportunities to excel, regardless of their needs and backgrounds.

Andy Deutsch

Andy Deutsch's career encompassed over 40 years' experience in the food manufacturing industry, managing businesses supplying the major UK retailers and foodservice operators. Latterly he was successful turning around underperforming businesses by focusing on the organisation and development of teams and the creation of strategic customer relationships.
He is also a trustee of the Church Homeless Charity and a mentor on the Bristol University Alumni Mentoring Programme for students from under-represented backgrounds.

Martin Hodgson

Martin had a number of significant posts in the Inland Revenue (forerunner of HMRC) including Regional Director for the East of England, investigator of overseas banks in the City of London, responsible for the operation of PAYE processes nationally, and Diversity Champion.
After retirement in 2002, he took consultancy roles successively with the tax authorities of Eswatini, Bulgaria, Uganda and Romania. From 2002, he has been a member of the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group. He was a governor of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from 2016 to 2023, the last two years as Lead Governor. His main hobby is birding.

Alison Warner

Alison has a wealth of experience in education, and has worked as a teacher, a Head of Sixth form at High Storrs and Assistant Principal at Loxley College (later the Sheffield College). She has also carried out consultancy work for the Further Education Funding Council, a London Borough developing a sixth form college, and at Doncaster College during their recovery plan. She has served on numerous governing bodies, including High Storrs, Holt House and Ecclesfield Primary School Federation, and is also a member of the Executive of Sheffield Association of Schools’ Governing Bodies.
